Food Access Fund
Background:
Our work at Old Ford Farm is motivated by our vision of a better food system. Here’s what that means to us:
First, we want to provide food that is truly nourishing. Eating whole foods that are fresh and local can make a world of difference to a person’s health. We know this from personal experience and from hearing the stories of countless customers over the years. Eating this way is also a great joy!
At the same time, we believe in a type of agriculture that not only produces healthy food, but also takes into account the long-term health of our planet. A better food system requires farms to eschew the monocropping and feedlots endemic to industrial agriculture and espouse practices that prioritize healthy soil, animal welfare, and vibrant surrounding ecosystems. This guiding principle extends into every decision and practice on our farm. (For a deeper dive into our specific practices, go to our Practices Page.)
Our farm store seeks to provide our community with good food produced here and from other local farms that share our values. Of course, farms using ethical and sustainable practices cannot produce food as cheaply as industrial agriculture can. We are painfully aware that this means that many people who value good food simply cannot afford it. We set up this Food Access Fund to make a small step toward addressing this problem.
How it works:
The system is very straightforward: donors contribute funds which allow us to give a discount of 50% to farm store customers when they pay with SNAP. (SNAP stands for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. Formerly referred to as "food stamps", this is the USDA program that gives grocery money to low income individuals and families.)
Info for donors:
If you believe in sustainable agriculture, the transformative power of eating whole foods, a thriving regional food system, and equal access to good food, please consider donating to our Food Access Fund. Your donation will help support our farm AND low income community members. We commit to full transparency regarding where your donation dollars go. When you make a donation, 5% goes to our fiscal sponsor, Good Work Institute, a local organization that manages the fund for us. Because we are working with a fiscal sponsor for this program, your donation can be tax-deductible. 95% of your donation goes directly toward supplementing farm store purchases made with SNAP. The farm takes zero dollars of donations for the administrative costs of this program. The farm benefits indirectly from your donation by having access to a wider range of customers.
